I replaced my starter with a Hatchi style mini starter a few years ago. Last July, I had a stroke and lost almost all my recall memory. A member back channeled me asking about that starter I had bought from Summit. I cant remember crap anymore. Doesn't the Auto flywheel have 178 teeth? ( L98}, mine is an 1986. Even better as icing on the cake, anyone know the starter I am referring to? Thanks guys. Oh, I believe it did have several mounting locations.

I bought a Summit Racing mini-starter for my old '87 a number of years ago. I bought it to replace the large OEM starter when I installed a set of Hedman headers.
I just went thru the Summit website and it looks like the have dropped the specific starter I bought but they do have small starters that will work. Look at the Summit Racing starter part # 813000B. Make sure that the starter base has an inline configuration for the mounting bolts. Part # 820323 may also work but the battery cable may have to be changed to a longer one. The starter I had bought did not need any changes to the cables. It was a true plug and play install.
As far as teeth count, their starter models work for either a manual trans flywheel or an auto trans flexplate. They show a 153 tooth and 168 tooth count for the same starter part number.
153 tooth flywheel is correct and there are many "knock-off" Hitatchi style starters. Good - better - best I can't comment on but I'd be looking for an OE 'denso just for ease of service when needed.
I've a friend who has a Hitachi (not knock-off) and he's been somewhat happy. If he's given the opportunity to choose a starter for a customer install he'll nearly always suggest a 'denso.
