So i have had periodic issues where the car just wont crank (90 L98 base) all the electronics works, security light flashing and nothing. I lock the doors up, go do something for about 5 min and open the door, turn the ignition and she starts right up.
I did the cheap resistor bypass because its easy to put back if needed. But apperantly thats not my issue. The guy i got the car from said it was the starter. But the starter looks great and never grinds. What the hell is going on?

You first need to establish if the Command to crank is getting to the starter while the problem is happening. you need to put a Test light or volt meter on the Starter Solenoid and see if the power is getting there with key to the Crank Position.
Now more basic is the battery good with Solid connections?
A Bad starter Does Not always Grind they sometimes do Nothing maybe just Click

I had a 1995 Jeep Cherokee sport that on rare occasions just would not start... As it turns out there were a few bad Windings on the starter so if the starter just happened to fall in the correct position it would not start....
and if this occured I would get under the truck and wack the starter with a small piece of 2x4 I had or slam the door really hard and it would then start...

I had altanator issues 2 months ago and replaced the battery, alt, solenoid and the 2 main battery wires at that time. It solved my charging issue but my starting issue remains the same. Its not all the time this happens. Just when I have it sit for a day it will do it after I drive it, say to the store. It starts just fine to get to the store but when I come out, it won't crank. I lock it up, smoke a cig then it starts just fine. No clicking from the solenoid, no grinding, no nothing. Just dash lights on, radio on and AC will blow if I had it on when I parked.
I swear, someone before me jacked with the alarm and now I'm chasing ghost everywhere.

Alarm Ghosts are the worst, I would still if your crank wire down on the starter is getting the Voltage while it is acting up, Also if by chance the car is a manual when acting up try roll starting it, if it starts The VATS is not the problem
If a Automatic have you tried to shake the shifter or try to start in the Neutral Position (out of Park)

Probably the solenoid is bad. Sometimes they will just do nothing but maybe a click.
I usually change the starter out with a lifetime guaranty. Did it 10 years ago and still good. Never had luck fixing the solenoid cause with my luck the starter goes bad soon…..been there.
I had an S-10 with a bad starter... carried a piece of steal to give it a whack... but it never failed on me... only on the rare occasions that my wife had to use my truck....finally replaced the starter, but my wife refused to drive it by then...

I have an auto (unfortunately) I have tried neutral and still nothing. I just had the issue again and this time it was bad. Stuck for a good 30 min, I had more resistors in the car and made a quick 887 and she started right up. I think my contraption got damaged during "heat shrink" I'll keep ya posted
