I've researched the forum on blower and programmer issues but I've been unable to determine what the problem is with my 96. Everything seems to work fine until I sit in traffic with the a/c on. Yesterday I was in stop and go (mostly stop) traffic for about a 60 minutes. I noticed that the a/c blower was not blowing as hard out of the top dash vents after a while. The controller works as I can direct the air to come out of the floor, a/c or defroster vents but the volume of air is diminished. After shutting the car off for a few minutes it cleared up and once again the air volume was strong. Would this be the programmer even though it can still redirect the air or is there something else I need to look at.
If I had to take an educated guess I would say the evaporator is freezing up causing low air flow thru it.
This could be caused by low on Freon or the cycling switch is not cycling open at the correct pressure or just never opening.
Next time this happens push the vent button (no AC just outside air) and wait 5 minutes or so. If the air starts flowing with more power, then you know the evaporator was froze up (it has defrosted). (However seems like you have done this already in your own way).
Then you need some gauges on the system to figure out what's going on.
Don’t just add Freon on a guess, not a good way to go.
Pcolt94. Thanks for the info. I'll try the vent suggestion since I only left it for a few seconds as I just wanted to see if the controller would move it to the floor, defrost, etc. I'll also get
the gauges out tomorrow and take a look.
You're a smart guy so I'm sure this is not what's happening.
Automatic Control
The system will adjust to maintain the temperature you set.
It will select the best fan speed and airflow setting to keep
you comfortable with the least amount of noise.
Press the arrows on the TEMP SET switch to set a
comfortable temperature. Then press AUTO and the
fan speed will adjust automatically unless you press
the arrows on the AUTO switch.
Ric96. Thanks....Yes I'm familiar with the C4 system. I've owned a few of them in the past and cumulatively have put over 300,000 miles on them starting with my 86. Didn't have time today to put gauges on it but I'll get to it tomorrow.
