Default Interesting take on 1990 INFL REST light

Bought my 1990 coupe March 31. It came with the INFL REST lit. I did the recommended ALDL test, showed right sensor. Reset it. Fine for about a week then the light returned. Just drove it like that.

In the meantime, I had noted oil at the back of the engine which was getting more significant. Traced to oil pressure switch. Replaced that. Leak solved.

About a month after replacing the switch, I decided to check the INFL REST again. Same code, right sensor. So I did a reset. Been almost a month and (knock on wood) light has not returned. And I drive the car almost everyday so it has plenty of drive cycles on it.

The ground for the SIR module is near the oil filter and that area was pretty saturated with oil during the pressure switch leak.

Just wondering if that had anything to do with the SIR code. Perhaps the oil raised the resistance of that reference ground? Long shot I'll grant you.

Just a thought. Heck, I'm just happy the light's out!

And I love the 90. Currently has 47,000 miles on it. Just getting broken in.

Could very well be, but I'd bet against it. The most typical cause of the INTL on the 90s has to do with (as you mentioned) the OHM resistance being out of spec. Most of the time this is caused by rust getting between the frame and the module mount. This of often caused by the water condensation dripping from the AC on the frame rail and running down to the module over a period of time.

The factory fix for 91 (and for 90) was to add dielectric grease tot he mounting surfaces. You can take the module off, wire brush the frame and module contact points and coat everything with dielectric grease.

Thanks, Bill. I probably should have mentioned I passed on the dielectric fix, for now. If my light comes back, that's a good winter project for me.

try adding a secondary ground to each sensor - basically a short piece of 14 awg wire with two 1/4" crimp lugs. ground one end to the sensor mounting plate and the other to a good frame ground. BTW, use grounding washers and di-electric grease.
