Gen 1 SBC 427/434's
Anyone here running these little Monsters? Any Info on them?
I'm thinking about getting my 85 C4 a Thump-Puller Killer Motor without doing any Boost, like a Turbo. For now.
Impressed with 550-625hp & 550lbs of torque running a 4bbl on some articles on these and it seems they can be had with a Dart block and with Big heads, all forged from about 5 to 7 grand

I bought a 434. It's okay. I have like 10.5-10.8 compression IDR anymore, but I'm having a hard time find how to handle supercharging it now. (Yes I know it is possible)
Hind sight 20/20, should have built for boost of some kind, if I was doing an SBC again it would be an Ls with lots of supercharger on it.
Just my opinion, but no substitute for a big block for what I like a car to feel like. 11K and I could have bought a 1100hp motor and been done. Of course the rest of the car does not like that stuff.

I have a 427 SBC in my 88. I still have a few more things to do with final assembly before I fire it up but I am crossing my fingers I can fire it this weekend with no issues
I don't have a carb on mine but I have the Holley EFI and ls3 coils on mine.
Here is the link to the engine I bought.

i have a 427 in my 91. good combo but you need to watch rod and cam clearance if you go with alot of lobe lift.the power you want will take good heads and valvetrain.i have used hyd and solid roller cams,it has a solid one in it now
and will not go back to hyd again,jmo..some have good luck with them but not in my case.i have just over 10k miles on it now but the ls deal is for real.dang thats a big photo lol

Now if you want some insight and read John Lingenfelter's (RIP) book on the sbc. He described the 420" build with 4.165 bore and 4.850 stroke using 5.85" rods as the best combination for a street motor. Rod length to stroke ratio provides longer cylinder life and 5.85 rods allow for a normal ring back.
Anyways I'm still finding 400" standard bore block s on Craigslist for about$400. Just don't buy one that's already bored out - the numbers stamp will be missing/removed if they decked the block at all.
Good luck.

Bet C409s car rips it up big time
Cant see the downside for cubic inches, big power and dont have to spin it to the moon to get there. x2 on solid rollers they cant be beat period Id never go back to a hyrdraulic unless it was a DD type thing.
7k is awful cheap for a long block wow...read the fine print on that warranty. Dont know how guys building engines nowadays make one dime at it.

..... Passenger side alternator charges a separate small AGM battery that powers the ECU only ... the ECU sees no less than 14.0 volts ... several engine operating functions are modified by the ECU based on available voltage ... injector pulse width and ignition coil dwell time to name the most important ones ... Drivers side takes care of electrical power for everything else ... i.e. , engine starting , power brake vacuum pump , engine cooling fans , lights , fuel pump , trans brake , line lock , etc. .....

..... It does alright ! ... rev limiter is set @ 7800rpm ... Its still streetable with a full exhaust system ... it gets out whenever I'm not too lazy to take the slicks off and put the DR's on ... I love to rumble my way through the local car gatherings .....

I built a 427 (4.125" bore x 4" stroke) pump gas engine for my 84 that I ran in the car for about 3yrs.... Dart Little M block, Dart Pro 1 230's, solid roller cam, Super Victor Intake and QFT 950 carb. Made 603HP N/A.
Ran low 10's on motor N/A (on 28X10.5 slicks) and low low 9's on 150 nitrous. No lie and it's totally documented that my 84 was totally stock except for the engine, TH350 trans swap/PTC converter and 3.73 gears. I drive the car everywhere back then. Super fun car on the street. It didn't even seem that fast. There are threads her on CF going back 4yrs covering my 84 here and there as it has progressed over the years.
I wanted to focus more on racing the car and less street driving with the car so I used the Dart block, sold everything else from the 427 and built a more track oriented 434. 13.1 Compression, SRH Profiler 245's, solid roller, Super Victor 2 and same QFT 950 carb.... made 722HP N/A and I had one hell of a nitrous kit built for it.All I did to the car itself was put an 8.50 cage in it.... still IRS, still TH350/PTC converter swap....
Ran a best 8.55@155MPH on 300 nitrous. High 9's N/A.
2yrs ago, I did a straight rear axle swap with a 9" Ford, 3.89 gear and custom 3 link rear suspension, 275 radials, 1.80 Powerglide/M&M converter and made a few small changes to the engine.
The car has now run a best of 8.29@165MPH on 300 nitrous.... and I have only made a handful of conservative 1/4 mile hits because the car is faster than the cage cert..... It still runs high 9's N/A even with a tight nitrous converter and only 2 forward gears.
This year I am changing the trans to a different 1.64 Powerglide and 4.30 rear gear and upping the nitrous to 400+ to focus more on Heads Up 1/8" mile racing.... The 4.30 gear is going to keep me from running the 1/4 mile..... but I'm shooting for 5.0's in the 1/8th which would be high 7's in the 1/4.
My 84 is still streetable. No joke it's a 99% race car now but, I still drive it to car shows and out to dinner every so often just because I can. I don't have huge spoiler or even run a parachute on the car.... I like it looking as stock as I can make it.
434 right after I built it.

Things got crazy after the rear end swap and 275 radials.

Oh, Bob......why do you have to be a 2 hour drive away? You've been busy. I think there used to be a 406 in that engine bay last time I was there.

..... Hey Jamal ! ... Its been a few years but yeah , the Chevy 400 block I was using had some unfortunate issues that forced me to upgrade to the Dart Little M . From there I centered the build around using the factory LS7 titanium rods . That's why it wound up with 421 cubits ... It's not the fastest C4 on the Forum but it does haul *** ... Running N/A in Florida air its consistently in the 6.60's 1/8th mile and 10.50's 1/4 mile through a full exhaust and weighing in at 3600 # on the starting line . C'mon down , we have some of the best beaches in Florida , no offense ! .....

..... I have no problems launching ... its all in the tires ... check my avatar , that's on Mickey Thompson 275-50-15 drag radials ... the factory 4-link hooks ... 1.44-1.48 60's with a little air under the front tires ... .....
