Default 1987, how many main cap bolts?

Rebuilding a 1987 Coupe that was my father's and i dearly love. It's engine was rebuilt when I was young. I was under the impression they came with 4 bolts securing the center 3 main caps. The block I just disassembled has 2 bolts securing all 5 main caps. There is a 638 on the side of the block. Is this the block that came with the car or did the mechanic who rebuilt it put in a block he had laying around? Thank you and i appreciate your time that it takes to respond.

Default 2 bolts?

Only 2 bolts! Wasn't this the sportiest car General Motors made? I think I remember $36,000 dollars in 1987. How'd they keep it so light? Any where else they didn't put enough bolts? Frame maybe?

2 bolts is all that's needed. 2 bolt blocks can handle over 450hp and the L98 is around 245hp , so why have a 4 bolt block..A friend of mine has an 86 with a 2 bolt block, bored and stroked to a 383 that turns high 11s in the quarter mile.. He's never had a problem...WW

"How'd they keep it so light?"

Body is not steel.

Steel 4 bolt main caps are available in the aftermarket, block machining required.

How did you arrive to that conclusion? He's certainly NOT the first to ask the 2 or 4 and WHY ....

I was maybe surprised he didn't ask how to ID by the block information on the right side on the cylinder head pad. Maybe he's just not aware.

245 hp doesn't require 4 bolt main caps, so they didn't get them.
