Default Free mod with a big difference

I'm sure I am beating a dead horse here. I did the air box cut out some time last month. Today I decided to make finish the free mod with ram air set up. I cut the front plate area out and placed a metal mesh with a license plate frame to cover it. This was all easy and cheap. Mainly used a dremel and cost $10 for mesh from Home Depot.

I just came back from a test ride. I actually feel a difference. I have been using a free gps track app. Prior to the mod my 0-60 was around 6.5 -6.7 and today I ran a 0-60 in 6.1 consistently. It also felt like a had a faster pick up from 60-75 mph.

The air is a lot cooler right now with fall season kicking in. Is it the weather? The difference in performance from last month to now is very tangible.

It's great that you recorded objective data. Some may poke holes in it for various reasons (different days/temps) but at least you're measuring which is more than most do. A 1/2 drop in 0-60 is pretty significant. More significant than a "different day", IMO.

Could you plug the hole w/rags or plastic...or the license plate cover and re-test? See if the car slows back down?

Don't let BTG see this thread!!

Yes I could plug it but I also have the air lid cut out. I have the bumper cut out and the air lid cut out.

Hi !
Didn´t you have to cut the energy absorber pad behind the front bumper to get air through?
Or are these baffles open to the rear side?

I'd bet money performance increase is the lower DA since weather is changing vs the free mod.

It is open. When you cut through the bumper you can see them, however they are really thin and didn't appear to block the flow.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. Always heard that this mod is useless or nearly useless. As Tom said it's great you have data. Are you planning to do further testing , like same day with cut out open and closed to eliminate variables?

No I have to many projects to work on to test this. I am positive it is pulling way harder. It could be a combination of things including air temps but I would be curious to see somebody else on here do it. I know it is working better. My 0-60 is by far faster and it is even better on the freeway. Somebody else can go through the hassle of testing the airflow and post here. It's easy AF and almost free to do.

I think people are excited and encouraging you to re-test for a couple reasons:
1. others have done this mod and said it didn't do squat.
2. it SEEMS like a mod that should help. You have evidence that it does. People would like to see more data. I know that I would.

Re-testing can't take as long as some of the tests that *I* have run for the benefit of this forum....that's for sure.

Ok here's some data for you guys. My 0-60 prior was pretty weak and even in the 7 second range on a bad day. It was about 98 degrees. Ignore the 1/4 mile as I ran out of run room. I was going for 0-60

The 6.1 speed was with the ram air same method of launching at same rpm as the 6.7 record without the mod.

It makes since to me.The stock induction system is really inclosed and restrictive. I feel like I removed a governor.

I seem to remember one of the catalogs of parts and accessories back in the day had a vented front plate insert.

That mesh could also be installed in the lower air dam intake, to keep debris out of the condenser/radiator area

I put this on my 89 and 91 after I cleaned the radiator. This is my 89. Well worth the effort.

I like that Bill, i'll have to look into that. Also possibly the "plate mod" as here in GA we aren't required to have a front license plate. Good stuff guys. I already did the heater hose mod with the throttle body, that felt stronger too. (Remembering a old late 80s Z28 i had back in the day, why heat your intake air to 220F - and i live near Atlanta, mine will never ice over) lol

Thanks
Don
