I'm reviewing the manual to see what and how they wired the fans on the 96. It says they are 2 speed fans that turn on at 220. but it doesn't say when they go into high speed, and if only 1 runs at a time.
Upon closer inspection of the schmatics, they have 3 relays. they put both fans in series so they only get 6 volts each. that's how they do the low speed, and then they ground the fans giving them 12 volts each for high speed. but the manual doesn't state at what temps they do this....... anybody futher investigate this.
thx
Larry
Speaking of the fans in a 96, I want to know how to get them to run more often without re-wiring and without a seperate switch. I was told by someone at Texas World Speedway (my instructor one day) that it is really easy to modify when they come on, but he left before I got a chance to get details from him. Can anyone help? I run 197 all the time when the car is moving, but if I'm sitting still withOUT the A/C I creep up to 220 (with the A/C on, still 197)
I used a HPPIII to lower temps that cooling fans come on (also replaced stat with 160) but don't know if you want to spend that kind of money just to set fans. I also used it to recalibrate speedo after gear change and raise rev limiter. Good luck.
btw: nice ride !!
Hey Rearview..... who was your instructor , might be someone I know. Do you frequent the Texas A&M Sports Car Club events? I am a longtime member........Sounds like we have very similar cars......... :seeya
The fan (s) have 2 speeds, low & hi. They operate in concert. The PCM will command low speed fans "on" at 226*F & "off" at 221*F & hi speed fans "on" at 235*F & "off" at 230*F.
You must rewire the fans into a fan switch, or reprogram the computer with a Power Programmer or similar to make them come on at a lower temperature.
Also, if youre concerned about poor cooling, you must make sure the front of your radiator is clean. It gets clogged up easily and raises your temps ALOT.

It was a PCA event. He was an older guy with a couple of ZR1s.. I'm trying to think of his name... :smash:
I'm a 6 year member of the TAMSCC. I autocross regularly with them and I'm quite involved socially.
We have an autocross Sunday you know... I need some competition. ANYONE IN THE CS/HOUSTON/AUSTIN/WACO AREA SHOULD BE THERE!!! ;)

Rearview, I wish I could attend this one.....but will most likely be installing my shifter and catback. Next event I make , I will keep an eye out for ya'....TAMSCC events (especially the practice events) are the best bang for the buck with your car there is, not to mention teaching valuable driving skills. :seeya

the 96 fan temps are quite different, and are set at much lower tempertures. and the high speed overlaps into the low speed range. not to mention the 96 FSM is completly rewritten in a new format with a ton of mistakes, and it's hard to locate information in there.
