Default Ported MAF Sensor pics Inside

I'm headin' to the track this Friday and at least wanted to make some sort of mod. Weather it helps or not we may never know.

I had removed the screens months ago, so sorry about no pics showing that. I just pried them out with a minature screw driver.

Now to removing the heat sinks...............

I first taped the ends where the wire filiments are and one by one hack sawed away the sinks. It took about an hour to lop them off, file any burrs and blow out all the debri.

I am interested in hearing about how it affects your track times. Good luck.

Newbie question: Are there any issues with removing the MAF and replacing with staight tube. The previous owner told me that he unhooked the MAF. What does that do for me and isn't that the same as removing it?

Thanks,

The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor senses how much oxygen is being passed into the engine. There are 3 small wires inside this sensor that are heated. The cooler they get, the more air being passed over the sensors wires and this information is relayed back to the computer in air Grams Per Second.

These figures go into figuring out such things as the load being put on the engine in combination with TPS & RPM readings.

So if you disconnect it the computer goes off of an internally stored MAF table because as far as it is concerned you have a failed MAF. Are you not getting any codes (particularly 33 or 34) with it disconnected?

I was wrong. The MAF is wired up but the fins inside are knocked off just like in the above pictures.

Flow tests have shown that the stock L98 MAF has a flow limit of a little over 500cfm; the gutted MAF has a flow limit of 750cfm.

As your mods push power over 300hp the stock MAF can be come a restriction to air flow into he engine.

Though it's true that the L98 ECM can only register up to 255gm/sec of mass air flow, higher mass flow rates can be accomidated by adding fuel at WOT with an AFPR and/or larger fuel injectors, up to the physical volumetric air flow limit of 750cfm.

Chuck,

Real nice job on the photos. This will be a good reference for those wanting to port their MAF.

Thanks Greg. I hope it helps someone out.

Jim, Do you have any personal before /after results from the track with the gutted MAF. I don't think I'm pushin' over 300 ponies but I may be floatin' around 280-290

let us know when it fails, I'd be interested to know what the reduction in service life is going to be due to the signal conditioning electronics having to store the extra heat load.

just playing devil's advocate :reddevil

I bought this one used from a local vette shop. So I have no idea how old it is/how many miles are on it already.

FYI, when I bought my Vette 2 1/2 years ago the MAF was already ported. I have not had any problems with it yet.
