Default Performance gain

When I pull my 96 out of the garage next spring, my goal is to beat a stock LS1 car.
Planning to add headers, exhaust, and CAI and tune with hypertech. Any estimate on gains?
Any opinions on OBX exhaust?

Car is 4 speed with under 50,000 miles with no issues.... besides that damn antenna. Lol

You will also need a cam and possibly head work to achieve your goal.

No hypertech, custom PCM reflash only. None of that OTS stuff works.

You will want a higher stall TC in an automatic to get it off the line, gear change preferable, but not strictly required if you do the former.

You will need to plan on a camshaft change and some head/intake portwork, might as well do 1.6RR at that time. Then you will need to have the PCM reflashed to work with that combination.

What gear?

C5s are 13 sec cars stock..headers a little work to the heads & small cam will do the job and then some
remember the c5 has less drivetrain loss so you need to do a littl more than just match hp #

oops missed vaders post

Hyperjunk works if the car were going off the cliff vs the LS1 car being driven down on the road.

You'd have to do the hard work and get a cam and headwork and find someone to dyno tune that combination. Hyperjunk is there to sell the suckers in their "something for nothing" or in this case, "something for very little" game.

When you say 4-speed are you talking auto or manual? When someone says 4-speed it makes me think manual, but corvettes were 6-speed speed manuals. So do you mean 4-speed auto car? It makes a difference on the recommendations since a 6-speed car is an LT4 and the auto car is an LT1.

If you are planning 383, then formulate the plan for that engine, don't optimize for the 350 and then have to move it all over.

You can pick the cam for the 383 and the heads now, you can install them if you choose, they'll work on a 350 provided you don't go too crazy in size. You would have to have it tuned twice however, once for the finished 350 and again once you went up in displacement.

Cam, 3500 stall and a 3.73 gear will get you in the 12s. Sticky tires required.

Is the D36 going to be up to the task with sticky tires?

That is a crapshoot. If it goes to the strip every week, probably not. It will take an occasional beating though. My dana 36 went down the track 100s of times with 1.85 60 foots. Still going at 175000 mile when i sold it. I did replace the clutches one time.

Your immediate mods may net you 20-35 hp. The LT1 exhaust system is not that restrictive. CAI on a c4 is more for looks than performance. The generic tune is may add a little because it requires a lower temperature thermostat. You would do better to get a custom dyno tune. You will need gears for the "stoplight grand prix"

I suppose he can change it now or wait till it breaks and get a D44. Not sure what his budget is

On a budget and not looking for a fire breather? I have 127k on my LT1 so I didn't want to go overboard. I did everything in this article with the exception of the adjustable FPR. I can honestly say it helped for the $$$ spent. You'll have to shop the parts as some of the vendors are no longer around. On my '96, I didn't need the bypass tube (although I now own one). You just reroute the hoses.

12 RWHP for $100 or so seems like a good deal. Nice article thanks for posting a link to that. Interesting about the air filter; plain paper saves money.
