Default Brake booster leak?

1989 , stock, auto trans. 53000

i have noticed lately that my brake pedal has been getting softer and softer. Sometimes it seems to travel closer to the floor board while I am at a stop, while holding the pedal. I have tried to pump it up, but really doesn’t do much. I am leaking no fluid, and it seems to take a harder foot pressure to stop then it use to. It has never seemed right in the five years I have owned it.

Also, I have been fighting a rough idle, and a little surging since I have owned car. I have posted a lot on this forum, trying to figure it out. I won’t go into all the things I have done and the money I have thrown at it, but if you can think of it, I have more then likely tried it. The point being is that when I press on the brake Pedal, the idle seems to get better. I hope it’s not just my imagination

could the two be connected? Does the brake problem sound like brake booster, if so how hard is it to replace?

When it finally goes completely your pedal goes to the floor and it is rock solid .... although you can still stop with a lot of effort. Happened to me. Maybe you have a vacuum leak to it but more than likely it's leaking thru the diaphragm.

Vacuum leaks are hard to track down but you can inspect all your lines and look for cracks. One place to look is at the cruise control module ... those lines are close to the battery and can degrade faster.

Good luck

I have checked all those vaccum lines, capped them, even tried smoke, no leak observed, and capping them off made no difference.

I've heard propane will help track it down by surging the engine when you find the leak ... others can chime it on the procedure. Take care of your booster 1st and I suggest a FSM to test it.

You can find them on fleabay or digital copies. Get the searchable digital one ... not one big image file.

Pull your master cylinder from the booster and see if there’s fluid leaking past the seals.

Have done the propane thing, no leak found. I do have fsm. I will do some more research on how to determine if bad. Anyone know if a vaccine leak inside booster can effect idle quality?

If brake fluid is leaking past the seals in the master cylinder you will get a soft sinking pedal. Has nothing to do with vacuum.
