:yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: This will be my next upgrade. Question: What is normal and offset clocking?
Thanks guys, but maybe I should of added 'cost effective' i.e. CHEAP! Its getting too close to Christmas and my daughter has a B'day this month! I have seen rebuild kits for around 40 bucks. But I would like to rebuild mine for the least amount of kick to my wallet as possible. 150 isn't too bad for a nice strong alternator, but 289 is frickin ludicrous. nearly 300 bucks would be better spent finishing my interior, or buying the parts for the 730 changeover. But yes, i need the alternator first, so i am still looking! (thanks again for the leads guys!!) Oh yeah, I can't put any chrome on this motor as it will make everything else look twice as messy!!
"clocking" refers to the position of the front half of the alt as compared to the back half. It can go 4 different waysand will make a difference in how it mounts up or the way the wires plug in. The best thing to do is BEFORE you take yours apart mark it with a scratch awl or masking tape (mines polished so I use tape) as a reference for when it goes back together. If you buy one that is out of index you can easily change it by taking out the 4 screws and rotating it to the nneded position. Sometimes you will take it too far apart because it won't just turn .......you have to lift the halves apart slightly. If that happens take it all the way apart and put the brush springs and brushes back into the holder and put a paper clip in to hold the brushes in place. It has to be able to come out the back of the alt and there's a hole made for this. Leave the paper clip in place until you have it screwed back together. There is a plastic piece made to do what the paper clip did but it comes with a new set of brushes.
Hope that helps a little Mike :seeya
