ok so I've watched the door. when the ac is on it holds tightly to the cold positions. but when I move to heat it starts to move that way bt then stops and just kind of bumps or waves back and forth. does this sound like the motor is the problem?

Yes. Depending on what year you have, one of the LEDs on the climate control panel will flash when the ignition is first turned on if there is a problem with the blend door.
Assuming it's not a mechanical problem with the blend door/motor, look at the HVAC programmer. It's mounted on the firewall above the gas pedal. It is common for the resistors associated with the blend door motor to overheat. You will see black burn marks on the PC board and/or crystallized solder on those resistors.

What year car? All C4s are not the same and year makes a big difference as to getting the correct information.
Always state year when starting a thread.
