Ok this is what is happening. When start the car no noise if i give it gas. Shift into another gear like od or d or 1 or 2 or r and it makes a tick(metal on metal) noise. When i go from park to od or d it shifts very hard and kind of lurches a little with my foot still on the brake and of course the little tick noise. It also happens when i give it gas from stopped to go and then quits. Also from a dead stop to wot i will get up to 5500 rmps in 1st and have to let off to shift to 2nd. i have heard of adjusting the tv several times and cannot figure out how to do it with out proper instructions. Any advise on what to do would be great and i thank you in advance for the help. btw i have gotten underneath and looked at the ujoints as possible ticking noise culprits but they appear to be fine. thanks again. :flag :seeya
In order to adjust the tv-cable look right behind the TB bolted on the plenum. Two cables go through a bracket. One of them is the tv cable which goes down to the tranny. Press the button in on the side of the bracket holding the cable(you should see what I'm talking about when you look at it). Slide the adjuster, which is on the front of the bracket forward or backward depending on whether it is shifting early or late, I forget which way is which though sorry. I know these are vague instructions, its kinda hard to explain how to do it, I usually have to play with it to remember exactly how to do it myself. I don't think that this is your ticking problem though, all this adjustment does is tell the tranny to shift earlier or later. Good luck.
oops just saw that you checked the u-joints. If you are sure you checked them correctly then I would start looking at the rear end. First check the fluid level since you say it is metal on metal.
okay i was under the car today(85 stock tranny) and i had it in neutral on a lift and i turned the drive shaft and found out where the ticking noise is and it is coming from inside of the tranny. once you start spinning it more it goes away. when you stop and start again it starts ticking again. upon lookin at the ujoints again there is no noticalbe damage to them and i have ruled them out. i think i just might have to go to chevy and throw my warranty at them. any other ideas before i do this??????????? thanks everyone for your help. :seeya :flag
just an updat eon my tv cable. i took the advice and adjusted it correctly to my knowledge and instructions, the car now lays rubber to the ground when i stomp it from a stop and shifts very smooth at wot into second and so forth. now when i am cruising along and go wot it will not go into passing gear and accelerates kinda slow. wth am i doing wrong here? anybody else for ideas on that one? which way and how far should i go? i went to all the way in and held the button and went wot for the stock location and this is what happened. i set it to three clicks out and it feels a little smoother but what about passing gear and such? thanks guys and have a good weekend. :seeya :flag
