Default Opti Blues Again

I love my 93 coupe. But failed distributors have cause more down time. Over 17 years I've owned the car, maybe a halve dozen or so. The last time I carried it to the Chevy dealer, because I must be doing something wrong. No AC/ Delco available, but I found a Delphi, and put that in. That was in Oct. 94. But only 4000 miles ago. It shouldn't fail this soon. I got a 106k on the car now. It had 60k when I bought it in 2000. I feel like i am beating my head against a brick wall. Very frustrating. Oh, and to top it off.(bad pun) I just replaced the targa top lens. Rick at CorvetteTops did a good job. That is to say it looks good. Only drove it once, so no chance to rain test it yet.. I can either do the job myself, or hire it out. But what is the best Opti to get? When the chevy dealer did the last one they replaced the ICM that they said was bad, and could be causing the failures. Should I replace it too? I had the ECM rebuilt shortly before the last rebuild, maybe time before last. Any thought Ideas, or suggestions appreciated.

No one knows. We're all part of a big experiment. It think everyone agrees that an OEM unit w/the Mitsubishi sensor is the best. Find one, though.

I can't see how in the world the ICM could cause an opti failure. Doesn't sound plausible.

There was a guy on ebay rebuilding optis. He said he has a line on some nos mitsubishi sensors for the earlier optis. i believe someone here has bought one. But they don't have a track record yet. I bought an AC Delco for my 95, I was not impressed and it had a problem so it went back.
I have read, don't know from experience, doing the vent conversion on yours may help with reliability.

JMO but there are two good choices. The Petris and the one buy Optidoctor sold on ebay.

I have a 92 that I recently replaced. Both options add venting to the earlier non-vented setup.

I went with the one from Optidoctor because it uses a NOS Mitsubishi sensor.

Another school of thought is buy cheap and change more often.

I’ve been running the Petris one for about 6 months. For some reason it throws a cel but I just programmed it not to show through tuner cats. Other than that it works great! I bought the extended warranty too.

15 months/5K miles on the Petris. No issues.

I passed on the extended warranty.

I also had excellent results with the AIP Opti from Sac City in my '95 until I sold it.

Quick question what is the average labor cost to have the opti replaced at a mechanic? Mine is still working but is starting to take a little longer to start when warm. I think I have been lucky it’s just starting to act up , just hit 114k and is a 94. Without the great knowledge on this form I wouldn’t know all the small nuggets of info on my car, y’all are great!

Just replaced the opti on my 93 with a sac city opti. car has never ran better, job appeared more daunting than it realy is. (but i have a lift) P.B. Blaster is your best friend. on the crank pully. use a punch (firm) on each side close to shaft ,mine popped right off. be sure to replace the seals on w.p. shaft & opti. shaft use the seal install tool on the opti. seal. use anti-seize on pully shoulder on crank before re-install. motor mnt.removal not requried to do this job. caulk around opti elec. plug in. hope this helps someone

I was lucky with the balancer it came right off. Just a few taps with a 1x1 wood stick from underneath.

As far as the water pump seal tool, I couldn't see paying what they cost so I printed one on the 3D printer.

After trying to source the legendary "sharpie tool," I gave up and used a socket.

Anyone tried systems to remove the opti and use an LS series computer that will be easier on tuners and eliminate the opti altogether?

I haven't tried it, and I doubt that I ever would. For the price to install and get it working, I can buy a LOT of opti's. I.E. More optis that I bet my car will ever use.

True but it adds a new dimension to the car. Easier time to get someone to tune an LS than LT. If you are modifying, it will help

That is true. That isn't something that I care about, however.

I would be curious although the next car I get would have an LS system. Still interested to know
