I'm currently shopping for a higher stall torque converter for my car. I realize that you probably get what you pay for, but right now I can't afford to spend the cash for Vigilante. I see a lot of auctions on ebay for converters from Hellfire and from Transmission Specialties. Does anyone have any experience with these companies or is there some other alternative I should look at. I believe the stall for my factory converter is around 1500 and I was looking to go to about 2000-2400. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom.
Give a call to Grant Transmissions (phone # on my site); he installed a 2,000rpm Grand National TC while recently doing a rebuild and the results are in my sig.
He did an s-10 2500 stall GM converter for me at $199
That is the same one that Vic89 uses and abuses with no problems
That is correct. Tom, get one from your local chevy dealer. It will still be a 12" convertor. I am running mine for over a year and no issues that all.
These are the most bang for the buck convertors. The PI is the best, but at $700, they are expensive.
If I were on the market for a converter, I would snag the one in the link posted above. I bought the same converter 3 weeks ago for $699.99
The normal price for the vigilantes are low to mid $700's and at some places you will pay over $800 !
The converter that I just pulled out of my car was only 1.5 years old (12" stock GM) and it was already ballooning. If I would have put in a high quality converter to begin with, I would have saved even more $$$ in the long run. Just my own .02 worth. Good luck with your choice.
how much does this GM converter cost? could you order one directly from GM, or would i have to look elsewhere? im asking because i work at an independant auto repair shop and can get GM parts for wholesale. alls i would need is the year/make/model/engine (or the part number that you gave out) that this converter came out of and i could order it cheap! one more question, is this a bolt on deal? just swap in place of my old converter?
yes its a direct fit the number is in my previous post and it cost me $199 for superior chevrolet there was a $30 core charge if you don't have one to exchange.
