I just got a unit as part of a fairly large multi part purchase, so pricing was good. It's never been run and I think it's version 6.32 (I'm at work, so I can't look at the booklets here).
I've done a little research and it appears there might be better units on the market if I was out looking specifically but heck, the price was right on this one so I took it. Is this a fairly decent package to use? It's potential sure looks exciting, at least to me (I am soooo computer challenged)
The car it's intended for is an '87 vert with an A4. The motor I'm building is a 420 Superram with AFR 195 heads and an undetermined cam (Calif emissions compliant). Maybe an LPE219 or a little hotter.......??????? My car already has NOS and I'll keep it with the new motor. This thing is just gonna see street duty and is not a daily driver. All I'm really looking for is convenience and reliability. (And a little can of whoop azz once in awhile  ) With this info as background, my questions are:
1. Should I go ahead and have this unit installed? On my current motor or wait for the new one?
2. If not, is there a better alternative out there that isn't gonna cost an arm and leg over what I've already spent?
3. Do I even need a unit like this for my package and purpose?
Any advice is greatly appreciated, this Dinosaur is like a fish outta water in this arena
I'm far from an expert, but I'm using it on my '85. Luckily for me I found a mechanic at the local chevy dealership who is regarded as the area expert. He has done some limited tuning to eliminate an over-rich condition at startup and in a week or two is going to do spme more in depth work.
Not the most user friendly software, but it seems to get the job done.
Thanx for the info, mshay. I got this system for cheap as part of a big package deal on other parts and it's new. I think I'll check around for an EMIC shop around here and see what they have to say.
Anybody else want to help me out on this one??? Please??? I don't know a darn thing about this stuff
I'd definitely recommend installing it. I'm running the 015013 DFI on my 88. DId you also receive a retrofit wiring harness in your "package"? It allows you to connect the DFI to your car without cutting any wires.
Benefits ( for me):
- no MAF air restriction, it uses speed density ( a big plus for you because of your CID )
- easy to log and manipulate data
- built in NOS control
Room for improvement:
- slow data transfer rate
- dated DOS based software (however so is the ECM)
- non-intuitive software
Thanks, vette_tweak, I appreciate the advice. Yes, I did get the harness with it as well. Are you running the Gen7 in your car or is a 015013 a different animal altogether? Anyway, I'm trying to find an EMIC shop in my area so I can check this out. Man, the days of tuning a carburetor with a long bladed screwdriver and a good ear are over, huh
Geeze, I can remember thinking I was in the new age when I got my first tach/dwell for tuning
The rev # you quoted (6.32) is my software rev #. It's definitely not Gen 7. I don't have experience with this new Accel DFI ECM. The 015013 is the "old" gen standard ECM number for our cars. Ya, tuning has come a long way. You 'll have tuning flexibility you could never realize in a carb/std ign setup with DFI. I personally love it... not a carb guy at all.
