You are correct in that you have to drill out the rivets to access the innards on the tracks. No big deal, just replace them with standard 3/16" rivets when you put it back together.
When my track broke, I naturally took it apart to find out what made it tick. However, after searching all over the web, I couldn't find the replacement parts anyone would sell to me. They all wanted the $150 plus for their exchange unit.
I finally took my track to the local boneyard and matched up a track out of a GM van. Cost me $20 and works fine.
