Default Timing questions... about to install distributor

Ok. So everybody says to set base timing to 6* BTDC as a start. From what I gather, I should rotate the crank until the timing mark on the balancer shows 6* BTDC on the timing tab, right? And when I put the distributor in, the rotor should point at the #1 spark plug, right? What position should the distributor be in? Am I all befuggled or am I about on track? Thanks.

I believe you want the timing mark at TDC when you install the distributer with the rotor pointing to #1 plug on the cap. You can turn the distributer to get the 6 degrees BTDC after it's installed with the motor running. Remember to disconnect the EST connector so your getting static timing, I believe it's the black and tan wire coming out of the firewall on the drivers side. Hope this helps 84 CF 91 ZR-1

What exactly is static timing and why would I want that as opposed to "non-static"?

Static timing is your base timing without any advance being added by the ECM. That would be how you get your 6 degrees BTDC. In the old days advance was done with vacuum, so to get your static or base timing you would disconnect the vacuum hose and plug it so as not to add any advance to it, except by moving the distributer. Hope this helps becarefull unplugging the tan wire they do get brittle and the connector tends to break. 84 CF 91 ZR-1

Gawd, do I know about brittle connectors. I broke the white distributor clip, the coolant temp sensor cover, and the knock sensor circular style clip! :smash: :smash: :smash:

Thanks for the info.

Sorry, one minor detail I left out. When you rotate your timing mark on the crank pulley to TDC make sure it's #1 cylinder on TDC and not #6. A 360 degree rotation from #1 on TDC will bring #6 up on TDC. This is a great way to adjust rocker arms start with # 1 on TDC adjust exhaust 1,3,4,8 and intake 1,2,5,7 rotate crank 360 degrees #6 on TDC adjust exhaust 2,5,6,7 and intake 3,4,6,8. Good luck 84 CF 91 ZR-1 This adjustment won't work on the ZR-1 :nonod:
