If it is a real street car, I would stay away from the 4.10's. 3.73 is pretty steep, but some like them. Do the math and find out how many rpm's you will be running at various speeds. Then be honest with yourself, how often does this car see the track? Do you take it on road trips? Do you have a stall convertor? A good convertor and a numerically lower gear may also get you what you want. I have a Dana 44 with 3.33's and a 2400 convertor. This is in an LT-1 that makes about 365 rwhp. I can pull high 1.7 60 ft times on Nitto's. (not drag nittos) My low end doesn't seem to suffer to much, even though my gear and convertor are very mild. The car is a blast to drive and I can take it on the freeway and run 80 mph and get over 20 mpg. Good luck !!!!!
Mackey is running a 4.10 gear in his '96, but he also is running a taller tire(28").
Thats right. :)
That is steep. Dad was running 4.56 with the Chevelle and a 700R4. The best he got was 11.5sec@117
We switched to 3.90 gear and it now goes near flat 11.4@119 pulling the front off the ground. 60' are low 1.6s.
However, the times may be the same. The car is MUCH easier to drive on the street now and much more fun. Before you couldn't take out without chirping the tires.
I think he would be still even quicker with around 3.33 or maybe 3.07 gears.
When I had probuilt build my tranny he said for the strip you want 1st gear to be between 9:1 and 12:1. So with 3.06 1st in our 700r4 you need ~3.07:1 to be at the lower end of the spectrum and 3.73:1 to be at the upper end. Now you can lower or higher these values with tire height, but just for sake of discussion this is a pretty good rule.
4.10 gears would put you at 12.5:1 which is at the upper end.
I personally think the lower gear you have the harder it is to hook hard.
