Default IAC Removal Trouble

I originally believed it was a fuel pump or maybe even fuel filter issue. I’d fire up my ‘85 Corvette and it would immediately die unless I gave it some throttle input. It would come close to shutting off at traffic lights. A lot of you said it was the idle air control and after researching I’m sure that’s correct.
Problem is it’s quite tight and a set of pliers just slips off. And I’m sure a 1/4 inch wrench will work. However, I don’t want to go and take my throttle body off for the iac because it’s so tight since the huge wrench won’t fit. Any ideas of how to solve my issue? (I haven’t tried the wrench so if that works I’ll just comment that the problems solved).
ps: What’s the procedure for resetting the iac?

Thanks guys - Jordan

I removed mine on the workbench, put the throttle body between a piece of wood and a hockey puck. Definitely use a wrench. It's plastic, so go slow forcing it. I was rebuilding mine anyway and had the back plate off. A couple of taps on the wrench with a hammer might help.

It seems that you are trying to take the IAC off the throttle body while it's still bolted to the plenum. That won't happen with damaging it. In order to safely remove the IAC from the TB, you have to remove the TB first. This will allow you to use the correct size wrench which is a 32mm socket or wrench.

Here's how to reset the IAC:
Start and run engine until it reaches operating temperature (closed loop)
Check and set ignition timing to 6 degrees before dead center (BDC) with tan EST wire disconnected
Check and set throttle position sensor (TPS) to .54 (+/- .08) volts at idle
Jumper terminals "A" and "B" on the ALDL
Turn ignition key on and do not start engine
Wait 60 seconds so that the idle air control (IAC) motor fully extends
Without turning ignition key off, remove connector from IAC motor
Turn ignition key off and disconnect ALDL jumper
Attach external RPM meter using Tach port or scanner using ALDL port
Start and run engine until it reaches operating temperature (closed loop)
Remove minimum idle air cap using awl if required
Adjust idle speed to 425 (+/- 25) rpm in either in park or neutral
Turn ignition key off and reconnect EST wire and IAC motor
Check and set throttle position sensor (TPS) to .54 (+/- .08) volts at idle
Reset ECM by disconnecting and reconnecting power at battery terminal
Depress accelerator pedal slightly
Start and run engine for 5 seconds
Turn ignition key off for 10 seconds
Drive vehicle to assist in ECM reprogramming
If you used a scanner, you should see around 20 IAC steps

Oh, thanks rssshen vette, forgot I used a 32mm socket.

Also, before installing IAC, make sure you review FSM or instructions with the part, may need an adjustment.

Example for mine, have to make sure the IAC pintle extends no more than 1 1/8".
