Have an 87 convertible. I am getting a "clicking" (the best word I can think of to describe it) noise under my car when I start off from a stop and slowly accelerate, turn right and accelerate a little or going about 45 MPH in overdrive and accelerate a little. Happens when I hit a bump sometimes and at other random times. It sounds like a metal strip vibrating between two other metal parts. I and others have checked under the car and have not found any lose parts. The exhaust pipe on the passengers side above the "X" support have only about 1/8" clearance and the same goes where the pipe goes over the differential. Have looked at the engine mounts and they seem ok. Would love to have any suggestions. Just cannot find the cause.
1. u joints, i had this on my 87. inner ujoint on pass side half shaft. replaced myself with birrosed c clamp style press from lical part store
2. teflon washer rear hub.
3. flyweel(or flexplate? cant remember which its called if auto) bolts coming loose or teeth contacting starter
4 cracked flexplate
5. torque converter coming apart (i had this one) sounded like scraping combined with clicking)

thanks for the advice. I tried moving the 1/2 shafts and got no movement but is that a good enough check for the u joint bearings? also, where are the Teflon washers rear hub located? Thanks, Dan K.
Most likely U- Joints...Washers are mounted on inner side of wheel bearing but these usually make a squealing or squeaking noise.. When I had a clicking noise , it was my driveshaft U-joints had seized up and wouldn't flex anymore while driving.. U-joints usually click. You need to get the car off the ground , or better yet on a lift to check this out....WW

Just wanted to thank those who offered help. I did replace the "U" joints in the 1/2 shafts and that did not solve the problem. I removed the spare tire and everthing that holds it in place and the noise was still there. also tried removing the sway bar where it attaches to the rear end and noise still there. I figured it had to be a tail pipe hitting something so ended up taking it to a shop and the very nice guy put it on a lift, hit parts with a rubber mallet and told me to lower the "X" support under the seat area (I have a convertible so it has this extra support) 1/2" and did not charge me anything. Got home and made my own shims and put them in place. It has not made the noise since! The tail pipe was hitting this support and the 1/2" of space was all that was needed to fix it. Now on to the next project after I return from 3 months in Alaska working on a boat.
No, sorry but not like that although I have done crabbing long ago. I will be working on my brother in law's boat which is chartered by a seafood processor to take fish from the fishing boats to the processing plant. We have chilled sea water on board to preserve the fish, Salmon, so they are in good condition when they get to the processing location. Have a 60 day charter which can be extended for 10 days. It is lots of fun and just enough adventure.
