When conering, travelling quickly but not turning very hard, my steering wheel vibrates quite hard. It sometimes does it travelling straight on poor road surfaces; wheels have been balanced a number of times, making no difference. Could it be shock aborbers ? The car recently passed our UK roadworthiness test which checks for worn suspension bits, and bouncing the car does not reveal any obvious problem. Its done 135k miles, they look pretty ancient (1986 C4 coupe). Front tyres have outside edge wear greater than the middle.
Sounds like you need an alignment. The uneven wearing of the front tires is the big clue here. Also check your air pressure in the tires. I don't think that "bouncing" a vette will show any suspension malady's because the suspension is too stiff.
Jack up the front wheels and then firmly grasp them from the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions. Does the wheel move at all? Also do this from the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions too. Does the wheel move at all. Let us know what you discover.
Thanks for the tip. The right front doesn't budge at all, in either axis, The left front is solid 12-6, but there is a slight movement 9-3, maybe 3-4 mm, that does not move the steering column. Brakes work fine and very smoothly, but applying them does not "take out" the vibration; it makes the steering wheel oscillate maybe 1/2 inch either way, then mysteriously disappears when changimg line back to straight ahead. Rough surfaces make things much worse
