I have to pull my instrument cluster. I bought a car that had an aftermarket alarm system. When it was installed they cut up a lot of the harness And Im going through it and repairing it. Can anyone walk me through the cluster removal? Thanks!
Short story....without damaging and scratching.. get a FSM . You need to loosen the upper dash pad (which involves removing console lid, shift plate, radio bezel, then side dash plates, lower drivers dash trim carpet and metal tray underneath to lower the steering column. Pull the cluster bezel (torx screws hidden around top of bezel) then you can loosen the cluster unplug and remove with the upper pad loose and raised a couple of inched and column lowered a couple of inched (best bet is to wrap top of column with tape to prevent scratches) but nothing but cluster wires behind there and doubt any alarm shop would have accessed that area. Just my opinion, you can do it quicker but have more potential of damage, cracks or scratches. Might want to get more diagnostics on what problem you are trying to fix before you pull cluster for no reason. IMHO
I pulled an alarm system out of my '91 and all the damage was under the hush panel and under the metal cover panel. I did not have to go behind the cluster as there is nothing really there other than the plug for the cluster. The horn for the alarm system was under the hood and door lock stuff under hush panel and very poorly done. The actually unit was sort of tie wrapped in the area above left foot drivers side.
Good luck and be patient sorting it out. Keep in mind the installer is a lazy person usually so look for the easy to get to places first.
If there's branding on the after-market box and you can ID it I'd try to get a wiring diagram for it and sort it from the after-market box to where it was likely spliced. Regardless of brand you should be able to follow the harness to splices. Like mentioned some/many installers are lazy but certainly NOT ALL! A clever quality installer can/could make it a very tidy difficult to sort installation.
Is there a particular reason you're removing it? You mention cut-up but that doesn't actually hint poor install. Remove nothing until you ID all of the wires/circuits involved.
What other after-market devices are installed?
There's likely nothing behind the cluster just like mentioned in post#3.
