Default Manual Shifter Pull Up Ring

1989 manual six speed original.

Does anyone know the hex key size to loosen the reverse pull up ring on the shifter?

Is it a hex key or something else?

Dang thing is small.

OK, found a reference to 1/16 inch. I do have a Hex wrench in that size but it will not insert - screw is probably buggered. I ended up using a very small Torx which is not labeled. Worked fine.

To hijack my own thread, I went ahead and removed the rubber shields and lubricated all shifter parts I could reach with white lithium spray. Smoothed out the shifter a lot but there still seems to be a lot of slop forward and aft.

All of this to replace the shifter boot with a new piece of leather.

In this thread .077 is mentioned and I last did the lift-ring in maybe '06 or '07 and I don't recall. I'd have maybe guessed 2mm.

Thanks for that. I searched and came up empty.

And here's a new shifter boot:

For some reason, I am remembering something odd....like 1.5mm? I'm fairly sure it was metric (and makes sense being made in Germany).

The presence of a picture implies the OP figured it out?

Thanks, guys. I got it with the small Torx. It held enough for me to back the screw out and re-seat it tight enough. Hopefully I won't have to do this again for awhile.

That always humored me because it doesn't match either SAE or Metric

5/64 is .078125 and 2mm is .07874. I didn't recall and didn't feel up to checking. I might!! I thought I had a 'lift-ring' here in the house but I don't.

I oiled the ring lift rod and it's so much easier to work now.

I've owned this car less than a year and I find these little mysteries entertaining, if not frustrating. I learned to wrench on a 1976 Fiat Spyder and I could grab two screwdrivers and 10, 13, 17, and 19 mm wrenches and nearly take the whole thing apart. I don't understand the need for so many different fasteners on some cars. Seems it would be cheaper to make if there were fewer choices.
