Default '85 front brake pad question

I'm doing a front brake job on the '85 that I recently bought (my first C4). I noticed that one of the pads has a longer lining than the other one. My question is this, does the pad with the longer lining go on the inboard side of the rotor (against the caliper piston) or on the outboard side of the rotor? Are the rear brakes like that too? Any help is appreciated.

I cant tell you from memory but look at the old pads and you should have zero problems figuring it out.

Brand and part# you bought? Is there a wear indicator?

They should be the same can fit either way, never noticed a difference in pad size on the 84-87 brake pads.

never gave any thought about one being longer, or different than the other. here's a pic of new powerstop ceramic's for my 85. it appears that the outboard pad material (the one WITHOUT the wear indicator) is slightly longer than the inboard side (w/ wear indicator). it looks like the pad mounting plates are dimensionally the same, but the pad dimension itself that differs. i'm sure there's some engineering or design reason for this, but I have no idea why, unless it's only because of the wear indicator location. note, this is for my powerstop's - whether all pads are configured the same, I would think so, but don't know for sure. this is a new one on me -

OP never came back and still hasn't. Maybe when he saw the comment 'wear indicator' it was sufficient explanation. All I was going to do is check and actually if there were 'wear indicators' it was self explanatory. Your pads are all inked as D294.

This is a very generic FMSI 294 pad image. It would/should answer all.

Please excuse a thread hijack but I must ask...does my '90 with original pads have wear indicators front and rear? Thanks.

Sorry it took a bit to get back to the thread, I have a lot going on right now. Anyway, a friend of mine has the factory service manual for an 85 Vette (I looked at it last night) and even though it doesn't say anything about the pads being different lengths it does say that the pad with the wear indicator (the short pad) goes on the inboard side (up against the caliper piston). As for the question of what pads I have they're just standard semi metallic pads from auto zone. It's not a hot rod, it's just a stock vette. My hot rod vette is a big block '69, the '85 is just gonna be a nice daily driver.

I've had two 90's - from memory, i'd say yes, front and rear -
