Default 1994 E-Brake

Got a 1994 Auto and the e-brake goes up like normal but then the handle feels like it's disengaged(moves up and down freely). It then will only disengage the brake if you hit it just right.
I've got the cover off and all looks normal.
I expected to find that the cable was broke but that's not the case.
There were no broken parts inside the cover.
I'm at a loss any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Handle is supposed to go down freely after the parking brake is set. Can you imagine how hard it would be to get out of the car with it still up?
To release it, pull the handle up untill you feel tension, then push the release button and lower the handle.

Plus you may have to pull it up and release it a couple times until the light goes out like on my 94

Makes sense, it's just a PITA to release!
Thanks for the schooling.

Honestly I'm amazed there aren't more posts like this from new C4 owners. It's a weird system. Last year when I had my 96 inspected, the poor guy came into the waiting room to apologize for breaking my parking brake! His day got a lot better when I told him it was working properly.

I am a new 96 owner and I thought the thing was broken. Took me a while to figure it out and had trouble finding any info about it. It is a weird system for sure.

On my car the lever would come up but not set the brake. When you put the lever back down, the brake would release. I had to pull the seat so I could get in there and oil it.
