anyone had an alternator that failed, but intermittently? mine goes from 14.x volts to 12.x, then back up while driving...bad alt or loose connections?
i checked all the connections, and i noticed that the negative battery terminal is stripped, but still seemed fairly tight. I bought an alternator, replaced the old one and the replacement didn't work at all :mad so it's off to the parts store with my new and old alternator and battery to get them all checked, and to pick up a new negative battery bolt, or cable, whatever i have to buy.
I need to hurry up and fix this so I can put the car away for the winter :jester
Remove both cables from the battery and clean the cable lugs and the battery posts and replace. I got rid of the GM wimpy 5/16 terminal bolt and replaced it with a 5/8 brass bolt from autozone. Also, put a timer on a battery charger and keep your battery up during the winter by setting the timer on its shortest duration, usually its 15 min per day. Lead acid batteries don't like sitting idle for long periods (3+ wks). The plates accumulate lead sulfate , a good insulator, and then , no battery.
You can determine if your alternator is intermittent by measuring the voltage on the output terminal on the alternator with a voltmeter and see if it is going from 12 to 14 volts with the engine running.
