Default power window fixed

Man what a job. Well, a lot of screwin around as you know. The driver's window went down and that's where is stayed.

So following principles of good trouble shooting, I thought should I remove the door panel and test for power at the motor or remove the console and test for power at the switch.

Both of em are kind of a coin toss, 'cause they're both a PITA. I pulled the door panel 'cause I thought that would be easier than the console. WRONG!

Of course once you get into the door ya got that stupid aluminum plate to deal with. Well all of sudden this didn't look like such an attractive alternative. So I started looking at the console.

Upon careful inquiry I realized that when I put the switch in the down position I got a very faint click out of the motor ( I mean barely audible) and the dash display dimmed ever so slightly ( again barely noticeable).

Being the quick witted devil I am I thought I bet the problem is in the switch and not the motor. So I set to getting at the switch.

Man what a screw around. You have to remove basically all the plastic on the upper dash in order to be able to lift the console and get at the switch.

There was some swearin goin on I'll tell you. Eventually I got in there. I had a spare switch that I had salvaged from a car several years ago so I unplugged the switch, plugged in the replacement and voila! the window worked.

Then came the getting everything back together including putting the door panel on. So that was how I spent my Easter Sunday.

Isn’t it a good feeling when you fix and finish one of those C4 PITA problems? I think when the C4 was assembled, it wasn’t meant to take it back apart again. If you keep your C4 long enough you will probably be doing this job again in the future and the window motor is no fun. So now you are a learned man.

There is one tool that could have helped you a bit with these types of repairs. It is called a "Power Probe". I have the version 4 and I find uses for it regularly.

What it does is give you a tip that can be either Positive or Ground by using a rocker switch in the handle. When the rocker switch is in the middle the display is whatever the tip is touching. Your window motor could be tested to see if it worked. You can supply full battery voltage or a solid ground directly from the vehicle battery to any connection you choose. It has a 20 amp circuit breaker built in as well as a display that shows you voltage drops and lots of other information.

Here is a link about the tool: https://www.powerprobe.com/

If you ever want to buy one look on Ebay or Amazon for the best price.

I have used this tool weekly for many years now. It has helped me on Motorcycles, Cars, Boats, lawn equipment and even my Cessna. After showing it to my mechanic she has one now. Very worthwhile investment for Fiberglass cars with electronic fuel injection.

Default power probe

Just out of curiosity did you buy the 100$ unit with the leads or the 50$ basic unit?
Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the tip.
I bought a kit on Ebay which cost almost $180 but it has several more items and tools. One of the tools helps find where a "Open wire" is located. The whole kit came in a big red box. The model 3 is still a useful tool and a lot less money.

I love this tool, it is invaluable in my shop. The best one to get would be the latest model, the Model 4. It can do so much around a shop.

Good Luck!

It is indeed a very very handy tool. And one that I miss when I don’t have it close by.
