So my trans shifts fine. Not what id call butter but just fine. So i am wondering what shifter folks upgrade to?
This 1 to 4 shift thing. I have noticed that when the light is on, its nearly impossible to shift 1 to 2. Is this how this thing works?
i have noticed that ifi am abit more agressive with 1st, the 1 to 4 light does not come on and a 1 to 2 shift goes fine.

The 1 to 4 Sounds Pretty normal, as for Shifting like Butter if you don't have History of Car I would Start with a Change of your Transmission Oil it Did a World of Change in my car. I used Dealership Supplied oil I Had on the shelf in my ZF But I am sure there are some more Performance minded People out there that can offer other and Possibly more Modern Product Than the unopened & Remnant bottles I had.
Owners manual is 'free' - ZF shift is covered beginning at 2-24. Many by-pass CAGS - some don't just drive understanding it's there. Service the ZF? YES - frequently. Many fluids - that gets debated often. 17mm hex for fill and drain - remove FILL before any attempt to remove drain. If you need a new drain/fill plug. The local VW dealer can help with that. You need to consider a service of the clutch master and slave also. How to service gets debated also.
VW# for plug is WHT-001-937 and tell them to be sure 17mm hex. They have a newer 'spline' drive and may try to sell you that.
Just got the tranny overhauled so fluids are good. This disconnect howevet is golden!!!
can this plug be accessed from under the car?
Must be done from 'under car'!
Yes but with a '96 OBD2 make sure you buy one intended for the '96. Use of the incorrect will set DTC, also with just the jumper & reistor the light will still function. No CAGS but still the light. PCM requires modification to make the light go away.
I don't recall the 'resistance' requirement required but I'd think a DIY much less expensive than the 'BUY' once you add the shipping from anyone.

***There's 17 year old thread where one poster changed his mind it looks like 3 times LOL
I have 'The 101 Project' book and confirmed the read from there.
