I was thinking about changeing to synthetic gear lube in my differental and in the transmission, as I understand it i should use 80w weight oil and i should use the limited slip additive from the deler in the diff.
I was told that this could help improve my gas mileage and I assume that it has better lubeing abilitys.
Is it a good idea to do this?(the entire procedure)
Is this the right weight oil (86 L98 with 4+3)
What is the best brand of synthetic oil to use?
How much oil will i need?
Do I need to replace any gaskets?
Thanks for your help. :flag :chevy
I was told by a friend of mine at the chevy house not to use synthetic in the diff. He only recommended using dino oil. I chose to go with the GM gear lube & additive. It has a drain plug so you don't need any gaskets. I got three quarts for the job to make sure I had more than enough. I believe it takes 2.2 quarts. I have had no noise or trouble since the service. Hope this helps.
In the ZF the only synthetic recomended is BMW Castrol synthetic with a GL3 rating. Other than that the ZF is very picky about fluid from what I always hear. I went with GM syncromesh for mine. It shifts smooth, (it did before & the oil was fairly clean but I wanted to know it was fresh) has no noise, & I have been very pleased with it. I know the ZF is $$$ to repair so I stick with what GM put in from the factory. That's my philosophy on it. :yesnod:
It can't hurt to change it as long as you use correct fluid. As far as gas mileage go, I doubt it will help that. Maybe a little if the fluid is very old, but if your car has been taken care of & regularly serviced I'd say you probably won't notice an increase in MPG. That's my thought anyway. I'm not a technician. I just play on in the shop.
