Default 85 Steering Intermediate shaft install

I've been struggling with this through the week. I swapped out for a 92+ intermediate shaft, swapped out the steering column end piece but cannot get it reinstalled.

I can get one end or the other to slide on but it doesn't seem like there's enough room to put the rack end on and then install the steering column end.

Is there some trick I'm missing? I'm starting to think I should take a grinder to it in order to make the opening bigger on the steering column pinch joint.

I installed a later shaft on my 86 for header clearance. No grinding was required. There is not much room to work but if the stars and planets are aligned it will go on. Get it turned right, a block of wood and tap it with a hammer might work.
