Was under my newly purchased 1984 for the first time. I noticed the exhaust was not stock. It is a Borla cat back system. Love that but this one is much more quiet than the one I had on my '94 Trans Am. Did this on my '92 T/a also, it was quiet too. Ended up gutting the cat. I know there is not a lot of performance gain but this Vette needs a bigger voice. This did wonders on the '92. Any draw backs been encountered gutting a cat on a 1984? If not I'll go ahead with it.
Emissions might not like you but if you don't have to be checked, go for it. Also check your local laws just in case your cruising area cops don't like your new noise.
Borla offers venturi's to place inline before the mufflers. Maybe you have them on your car? I have a borla catback and I had to put silencers in my mufflers to get rid of the drone.

Last time I checked, it wasn't stock so hard to say about the venturi in his car. He'd have to pull it apart and look
Haven't been fully under the car yet. It is louder inside than outside. Doesn't have near the sound outside that my 94 T/A had. That's what I'm looking for.

IIRC they have a true dual style setup that merged after the cat, a lot of the quietness on these comes from the way the earlier front y pipe dumps into the cat (they fire at each other almost, very inefficient). I could be wrong on the true dual statement though. But I do know having two smaller cats on each side vs one larger one drastically increases the sound. My cousins third gen straight piped was a lot louder than mine straight piped stock for stock.
No downside to hollowing the cat out except emissions of you're tested.
