Default Knock Sensor Connection Missing

Hello everyone,

I am in the middle of a valve train job on my 84. During the rebuild I have been going down the line replacing all the pigtails for each sensor. When I when under the car I noticed that my knock sensor had no connector attached to it at all. I have un-loomed the wire bundle that attaches to the starter thinking that a broken cable would be hidden inside, but I haven't been able to find anything.

So my question is, can someone please tell me where the cable for the connector to the Knock Sensor should be located in my 84?

I cant recall which loom the knock sensor wire is located in from factory but I do know that it will run threw the firewall just behind the passenger side valve cover. If you look in between there and knock sensor you should find it. Hope that helps!

That doesn't sound correct. I'd think the KNOCK would be in a conduit that you could trace from the ESC on the blower box.

Check the FSM @ 8A-22 maybe

I could be wrong but I thought it went back to ecm, then ecm over to ESC. I agree though, check wiring diagram.

I'd think HRR will stop by soon to confirm for the OP but until the FSM is 'confirmed' to be in error I generally rely upon it. There's relatively good/reliable images in the FSM for component locations and routing. If the OP has a DK BLUE wire @ the ESC it's where I'd suggest a start.

I just ordered a service manual today off ebay, but it won't be here for a week. Anyone on here have a diagram picture or PDF?

Yeah I think you might be right, it might run over to ESC first. If you don't mind doing a little simple digging, id try there and check for that dark blue wire.

Unfortunately I don't have any cable by the knock sensor, its completely missing. In that area I have an orange cable that goes to the coolant temp sensor. A thick black cable that goes to the starter, and a smaller cable that also goes to the started.

Default Photos Of Cables & Broken Knock Sensor

Here are some photos of what I see. The blue cable you can see from the top view leads to a plug on the blower motor.

Thank you all for your help

Default Found it

I found the cable, it was cut in a loom near the driver's side. The cable was indeed dark blue. Very odd location, same area as the distributor cables. I un-loomed everything and the cable lead back to the ESC located on the passenger side blower motor. What a nonsensical route for GM to take with this cable considering the Knock sensor at most 2 feet from the ESC, and the cable is run about 4-5 feet around the block.

Thanks for the help.

Not really it's part of the 'engine harness' and is a separately assembled component designed and fabricated for an 'ASSEMBLY LINE'.

Nicee! glad you were able to find it. I have pulled my engine harness apart and yes there several overly long wires and routes that do not make sense. The vacuum line for vent control runs a large loop and is about 4 feet to long but o well.
