I am going to replace my injectors in my 89 vette. What gaskets ( make)and other misc. parts, tools do I need????? Any hints or guides would be greatly appreciated.
I've never done the job myself, but I do currently have the top end of my '89's L98 engine appart, so I have a fair idea of some of the items you'll need to do the job.
Assuming you're going to leave the intake manifold on the car and only pull the plenum and runners off, you'll need a set of gaskets for the runners, both sides upper and lower (and you might as well get the throttle body gasket too, just in case). The stock GM set is fine and the price shouldn't be too bad. Make sure you have a good set of 3/4" drive TORX sockets as well - the runners are held on with TORX head bolts, as well as the fuel rails. I don't know if your new injectors will come with new O-ring seals (on the nozzle end). If not, get them. And since you're at it, consider changing the small coolant hose that runs from the front of the intake manifold to the underside of the throttle body. It often gets neglected by owners and is a fairly inexpensive item to purchase and easy to replace during a job like this.
Other than that, just make sure you remove the gas cap and relieve some fuel pressure before attacking those fuel lines.
Another item you might want to consider, be careful when you disconnect the front fuel line. If yours is similar to mine (85) then there is a small o-ring that you need to be careful not to lose.
You may also want to get a foot of gas line hose and two small hose clamps to loop over your fuel lines. Mine keep seeping fuel till I capped them off.
A magnetic wand makes starting the lower runner Torx bolts a little easier as does a long hex wrench of the size to fit them.
Be careful pulling the injector wiring harness off the two posts as the plastic tabs tend to break.
Also the solid vacuum lines under the front of the plenum tend to get brittle so handle with care.
Lube the new o-rings with a little oil when assembling. If you break any of the clips that hold the injectors in, the part # is 17111267 for a pack of five.
