Default 86 tuning question

Hi all. I just begun my venture down the path of tuning my 86E. I am using tuner pro rt V5, moates apu1 and the g1 adapter.

Today I got everything in the mail and I thought I would first try some datalogging using the aldl cable off of the apu1. After getting the settings correct and downloading and installing the driver for the apu1 I was able to get live data and record it but theres a hitch. For some reason when Im plugged into the obd1 port my rpms go up. Disconnected my car in closed loop and at temp idles around 575-600 rpm however when Im connected to the obd1 port the car idles around 1000 rpm.?? Is there a setting I'm missing or does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Car info- 86 iron head, ported edelbrock high flow intake and runners, 24 lb bosch 3 injectors, headers, high flow cat, borla catback, heated o2.

Thank you in advance!

I know connecting across pins A & B of ALDL connector can have different effects. Did you wait at least 5 sec with the ALDL connector connected to your laptop and the ignition ON before starting the engine? Also some software has a connection check you can and should perform before starting the engine.

There is a setting under scales where the rpm is raised to 1000 rpm when you are in diagnostic mode. Eliminate that rpm adder.

I did perform the test and it said the cable was connected. Not sure about the timing before turning the key. I will give that a try. The connector pins look good. Thank you for your help I will report back later today.

I looked for the setting but did not see it.

I'm failing miserably. I thought I would try burning a stock bin and putting it in the g1 adapter o see it the car would run. I downloaded the ARAP bin file from the tuner pro website and burned it onto a chip. Then I loaded it onto the g1 and got a crank no start with an odor of fuel.
Put the stock prom back in and after some cranking it started. Was that not the correct bin? I thought I had done everything correctly? Does anyone have a known good bin for an 86 auto 3:07 I can try?

Ok I figured out what the problem was. When loading the chip in the apu1 to burn it you need to have the notch facing towards the lock in the zif socket. Then when you place the chip in the zif socket on the g2 adapter the notch is supposed to face away from the lock. Hopefully this helps someone out.

Now with the injector lb hr changed and a little wot power enrichment the car is improving! Also have the fans coming on a little sooner.

There's always some tiny detail that gets overlooked to become a show stopper and it happens to us all. Just part of the learning curve for your equipment. Sometimes it's a part time job researching little show stoppers. Takes more patience than money.

Thx for sharing.

Let us know how the ARAP works on your 86. I'm considering doing the same thing to get rid of my hypertech and upgrade to a more modern bin and run at 8192 baud instead of 160.

You nailed it! All it takes is one thing wrong to stop you in your tracks. And it IS very time consuming and frustrating to try and piece it all together when you know nothing. But perseverance does pay off, with a little luck lol. I realize how big of a knowledge base there is with this but there really is not a good "beginner guide". Instead it's tid bits of information scattered across the interwebs.

Right now I'm running a bin from the EFI-gear heads website. It's an 86 Vette iron head 3:07 one. It's been good so far. I haven't had the time to get into the maf tables yet but I did change the injector size, delete vats, lowered my cooling fan temps a little and bumped the WOT power enrichment a hair.
