Smog pump??

Smog pump??
my 6speed 1985 stalled out at at an intersection and won’t start back up (turns over once, battery is fine and starter was just replaced), it has stalled just sitting at intersections 2 or three times recently in the past but has always started right back up. brought it to a new garage and they say the smog pump seized up and i will need a bypass kit since they say the parts for that year are not manufactured anymore. not sure the smog pump would cause it to not start though and wondering if i should try to bring it somewhere else or buy the pump myself and have someone install it for me since they are asking 500$ for a 100$ part and install

Depends on how handy you are. Put your location so someone might be able to help you out. Are you willing to remove the serpentine belt, pull the pump, risk a broken bolt or two, pull off the hoses, take the diverter solenoid off and plug up the tube going to the catalytic converter?

Pull the belt and saee if it starts. If it doesn't it is not the smog pump.
Turn the pump by hand while belt is off.

I'd try to turn it by hand with the belt off, the AIR pump is pretty freely spinning.
