Good morning folks. This may be a dumb question but because I'm new to this I figured I would ask it. I'm hearing a whistle coming from under the hood of my 84. Additionally every light in the car pulsating when engine running. The whistle does not sound like a belt squeak. But coming from that area. I was thinking maybe the alternator because of the area of the sound and the light issue. Thoughts??
A whistle is pretty indicative of a vacuum leak. I'd get under the hood, start the car and ... listen. You will be able to trace it pretty fast.
You flickering lights are probably a side effect of the whistle, meaning that the vacuum leak is causing the engine is running roughly and the alternator is not charging at potential.

I would got by an auto parts store for the free battery and charging system test that some offer. Just to be sure they are both 100%.. Vacuum leaks that whistle are normally large ones.
Believe it or not, but one of my cars if you the wrong brand of air cleaner in that thing whistles to it's heart content. change the filter and the whistle goes away.
