I am currently in the process of rebuilding my 190,000 mile L98. When I got the top end off, I noticed a lot of carbon and grime build up on the TB, plenum, and runners. I tried several ways to clean the inside of the plenum runners but couldn't quite get into the deepest part. Finally, I found a bottle brush in the cooking utensil section at Wal Mart. I put the runners in the kitchen sink (be carefull if you are married, the wife might not like this part). I then filled each runner with Castrol degreaser and let them sit over night. I ran the bottle brush through them and the grime just melted away. Make sure and rinse the parts very well after you clean them. Hope this can help somebody out there.

Re: l98 plenum runner I.D. cleaning tip (JCAIRE2)
Good tip. Those things hold degreaser well. I ended up using a small wire brush, and managed to get it pretty clean. Pulled some rags through the hole afterwards while twisting, to get the leftovers out.

:yesnod: A bottle brush will do it. I used something very similar that I found at a Sears Hardware store. I sprayed the inside with brake parts cleaner and scrubbed away.

Uh, I actually did that after the insides were clean. I was trying to remove the stains on the outside of the runners. It didn't work. Anybody have any suggestions on how to restore the outside finish?

Hi Torque91,
I use Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner on the plenum, manifold and runners. Works great. I had some really bad stains that I used a light coat of rust remover (yeah, the stuff for steel) on first followed by a rinse then the LBTTC. No matter what I do to the smog pump bracket, I can't get it to look that good. Must be different AL.

If uncoated aluminum try Eagle 1 Type B for unfinished aluminum wheels. Follow the directions, if you leave it on too long it will make your wheels look worse. If you spray it on, give it a little rub with a soft brush, then rinse within 1 minute, then you are in good shape. I use it on all kinds of as-cast aluminum wheels.
