Default early c5 calipers on 96?

Are the c5 rears a bolt in on my 96. I have what appears to be one lazy caliper and trying to come up with a plan. Rear brakes are horrible.. dont really want to tear my master out and do the proportioning spring upgrade. Replace the fluid last weekend and nothing noticed. Lots of c5 rears on ebay but not many c4.

the DRM spring in the master takes a grand total of 5 minutes to change...you change it out the front.

I would look at rebuilding the calipers.

From everything I have read the C5 upgrade is NOT a huge step up from the J55 brakes the 96's all have.

amen.

if i remember right the c5 rotors, while thicker, are actually less in diameter (like 12.75 or 12.5”) when compared side by side to a c4 j55 13” rotor which is a true 13”

if going thru the effort, put some real parts on there like c6 z06 brakes or wilwood setup

When I read the instructions it seemed like a big job. I know for myself bleeding an air infiltrated master can take hours. Just depends.

I'll go ahead and buy the spring and order a rebuild kit... good advice.

Keep in mind, swapping to C5 REAR brake calipers, you will lose your parking brake

I sucked the master dry, put a small pan under the master(its a tight fit), took the large bolt off, pushed the brake pedal, took out the proportioning assembly, swapped springs(you need c clip pliers, a small socket, and a vice to get it back together), then put it back in.

I was doing this at the same time as doing DRM stainless brake lines so I bled the whole system with a Motive Power Bleeder. No air anywhere. Brakes are fantastic for 22 year old pads and rotors.

I bought remans off rock auto. They were a lot cheaper a year ago for whatever reason. They are like 50 each if you return yours which still isn't bad.

Either way, I would replace the lines that connect to the calipers as well.

The 96 brakes are quite good. My friend has a base 94 and it's crazy how much beefier the 96 front rotor is. It doesn't sound like a lot but when you're holding them and comparing, it really stands out. I also always assumed the brake pads would be different but they are not. The upgrade is apparently all the larger rotor. Blew my mind.
