Default Cam advise

Hi all, I'm looking for some help picking a new camshaft for my 85. I'll be using Scorpion 190 heads , ported SLP runners with ported stock base and plenum and long tube headers. Im looking for more power to Autox. Thanks

Have you thought of asking the guy who will tune the car for you? I'm not sure you will see radically more going that route. I would do headers, intake and tune first. At that point, you can hold off or add a cam that the tuner recommends.

Duration and LSA are the issues with tuning - are you using the 870 computer ?

If you keep the duration short (219 - 229) and use a 112 LSA cam the tuner shouldnt have too many issues.

As far as lift - see what the recommended max lift is for your heads/valve spring combo and go just under.

The plan is to use the 870 if we can but make a change if we have to. I was looking at the comp 260xfi which I'm pretty sure will work but thought someone here might have good experience with something else. The 260 cam has close to .500 lift.

Did you realise that cam is a roller ? you will need roller lifters and a cam button.
it actually has 560/550 lift with a 113 lsa.

This is not the focus of your question, but are you sure the stock converter is 2100?

No I'm not sure that's what I've researched. I do need to determine that. I've read that 85s have the loosest stock converters.

85 & 86 have a 2026rpm TC from the factory, which is all you will need.

With the TPI staying on it, I'd pick a camshaft with a duration range of 210-215/215-220 on intake/exhaust at 050", then whatever lift with 1.6RR, probably around .550 ish.

the 86 has the best converter. You cant buy them new from GM anymore. However, there is a V-6 S-10 pickum up truck that has that same 86 converter that you can buy, or it might be even a little better than the vette verter. I will find where I srored my info and post it here later

This is one that I've been thinking about.

Lingenfelter made a "214" flat tappet that should work without him milling his guides down.
Real smilar to the generic/Elgin 214/224 cam youve seen forever. No need to machine the guides but always double check. Strong torque
