I'm doing the same thing to my '89 L98. The reason I'm doing it is 'cause my head gasket blew on the driver's side. What's funny is that it looks like this has been done BEFORE on my car, 'casue the gaskets I just took off are Felpro 7733s! Doesn't say much for their quality, if you ask me (especially when you figure I don't really push my car very hard).
I've looked into alot of different head gaskets as potential replacements ('cause this is not a job I want to repeat any time soon) and the general consensus around the forum and amongst most of the engine builders I've spoken to is to go with Felpro 1010s. I just recently bought a set and honestly you can't compare the 7733s to the 1010s - the 1010s are a far superior product. If you were driving a Caprice, then the 7733s would be fine, but they won't last on a Corvette.
So do yourself the favour, get rid of the 7733s and get a set of 1010s - they're more expensive, but well worth it in the long-run.
to the person with gasket problems, did you deck at least .005 off the head? the surface HAS to be flat for a good seal. head gaskets don't blow if the assembly is done right on a basic street car, my guess is you have a warped deck or warped head or both.
the 7733 PT are the stock .039 compressed height replacement gasket from Fel Pro. I have them on my '90 and they've been fine for about 5000 miles so far. I had .010 taken off the heads prior to reassembly.
Since my motor is 100% stock, I figured this gasket should be fine. One like Scorp mentioned couldn't hurt if you are going to be stress testing the motor frequently!
