Ugh! Changing every 3000 miles is now an urban legend and all you are doing is wasting the oil. Looks like Jiffy Lube's advertising is working.
If you are using synthetic you can easily go 6000 miles. As a matter of fact Mobil 1 use to advertise 20,000 miles with their oil.
Every 3000 is still a good idea because as the engine operates the oil recieves combustion by-products. It is not necessarily a good practice to let these combustion by-products build up too much. Filters cannot remove and hold all these wear-increasing combustion by-products.
I change every 3000 w/ Mobile 1 5W-30 and install a new K&N oil filter at each change as well. Only filters I would use would be: K&N, Mobil 1, AC UltraGuard.
Have your oil tested at 3000 miles. I guarantee it will still exceed API Service SL/CF specifications. 3000 mile oil changes are wasting money.
It's not so much the oil as the filter that should be changed, and with the synthetics, the oil is the larger cost.
Of course a high grade filter will last longer than the standard filter most lube & go's use.
Heck if ya just changed a paper filter once a month, you would get some great mileage out of standard cheapo dino oils.
3000 mile OIL changes are a myth, mainly only used here, europe uses the same oil, and has a 6000 mile change interval, and are going to 10k intervals.
Now this is not to say DONT change your oil every 3000, it's just not NEEDED.
a high grade synthetic, and a high grade dual filter and bypass setup will get ya a quality 20k interval ( which can be backed up via analysis ). Dont do a dual bypass, but still use a high grade filter and synthetic oil, and an analysis will get ya a good 10k - 15k interval
all synthetics now contain detergents ( as did dino oils 20+ years ago ), so the only reason to remove the cleaners was (imho)..... decrease the intervals, remember the change interval used to be 6000 RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OL' U.S. OF A. ( and that was with 20+ year old technology )
It depends on which motor you have, LT1, L98, etc. The LT1, regardless of what was said above, needs synthetic oil. Its printed on the motor, and in the manuals. It uses reverse cooling heads so it runs hotter than the other motors. This means if you use dino oil it will burn up and degrade and slowly destroy your motor. The synthetic(full, not the castrol, quakerstate or other junk) is 100% chemically created. It will not burn up under the additional temps and will let your motor run for a long time. The light comes on after its too late. There is an oil sensor that tells you the oil has degraded and its time to change. Usually happens around 5-6000 miles on an LT1. This means you are already doing damage to the motor. If you have a pre '92 car, you should continue to do what the previous owner was doing, synthetic or dino. If they were using dino, using synthetic may cause oil leaks at the gaskets as the dino oil can plug these leaks and the synthetic can dig out these plugs. If they were using synthetic, keep doing so as this is a superior lube and will give you longer life on your motor.
Regardless of mileage, change the oil every three months. Oil sitting in a motor will collect moisture and dirt regardless of mileage which will eat up the motor if left in. I use Mobil One 5w30 exclusively and it runs better stronger today than 5 years ago. Hope this helps.
JWADE91 I am truly impressed with the 221K. I like to see that someone besides myself is enjoying their Corvette as a daily driver (25K on my 96 LT4 in the last 1.5 years). Mind telling us what items have needed repair on your car? FrankLT4CE
Thanks for the service manual web site I have seen a lot of people say that is the way to go. I finally broke down and purchased one, it should answer a lot of questions for me.
