I was having similar problems that you are having. It would start perfectly for a day or two, then it wouldn't. I would drive it, park it, go back to it, and it wouldn't start. Etc, etc, etc.
I got fed up at the gas station one day when I stopped for gas and it wouldn't start. I played it off like I was checking the oil (3 lovely females in a car behind me were checking me out). I lifted the hood, grabbed my pliers, and found that my negative battery terminal was half way off the battery!!!! I tightened it back up, started it up, and cruised away. (I have a fiance, what do I need cute girls checking me out for?). :conehead :D

If the VATS is preventing a start, you will not hear the solenoid click.
Could be though. But my guess would be the starter. Well, you heave two options then. Disable the VATS or buy a new starter. :D

...I am sure my starter is real old, and knowing 89x2 his is old as well. I'm starting to hear a little stater whine from the drive gear not retracting after it starts, so I know it needs replaced. They have just given up. ...From my own experience you are dead on.
Don't think the exhaust could be a problem unless it was a RUST flake problem
Y'all won't leave me stranded on Skyline this weekend, will you???

Well Damn...Mine did it again. NOw I am puzzled..... I changed over to my extra set of keys, I thought maybe the pill on my original starter key was bad or sorta bad. Now it did it again, :cuss I can't hear any clicking noise when I try to restart my car but all the lights, pke & radio work great. My alternator is putting out 14.5 to 14.2 volts. The battery warehouse checked my battery and its ok. The starter hasn't had enough time to get hot because it was only an 8 mile trip to my destination but the car wouldn't even turn over. What in the hell is wrong with my car. :cry

Okay, looks like some of the info here is not sinking in to some of you guys. :D  :jester
Maybe in caveman speak we can understand.
Heat
Bad
Heat
on starter
Very bad
Heat
Long time on starter
Very very bad
So, over time the heat can wreck havoc on the internals of the starter and soilenoid stator. So the damage is done, which means it may not crank over even though the starter is not hot.

Does the starter soleniod click when it's heat soaked? I have my starter wrapped so I'm not 100% positive on the solenoid. All my instances of a no start condition has been the VATS, no noise at all.
Mine made no noise whatsoever when it did not start
