With my car's shifter in a low gear, like maybe 3rd, (where I have lots of torque) I can feel the shifter move slightly in my hand as the engine/tranny torques when I accelerate hard (slam the pedal :D ). It moves sort of side-to-side, but only very very slightly. You can feel it move but probably would have a hard time seeing it move (if at all).
Other than this it feels solid & shifts smoothy into & out of all gears.
So, is this normal or should I have my mechanic looking for tranny mount issues, etc.???
If it matters, the car is a '96 LT4 with 56,000 miles & is stock.
Hmmm, you may consider finding another late model zf6 owner and ask him if its ok to ride along and see how the shift mechanism feels during various torque applications. Then you could compare.
Merely speculation but I would evaluate my motor mounts, transmission bell housing bolts, shift mechanism, etc with a visual inspection. Make sure everything is tight, all bolts/nuts present. I don't recall that much torque feel on my 90's shifter, but pretty subjective so can't really say.
If it is a very slight side-to-side, I think you are fine. This is likely a result of the motor mounts flexing.
You may want to check the torque-arm bolts that fasten the back-bone to the ZF and at the rear to the diff. Make sure all 4 are VERY tight & torqued to the proper specs. As these loosen, you'll notice a distinct up/down movement of the shifter as you accelerate. This is the warning sign that they need some attention.
