When I have the top down, I can sometimes smell gas. It seems strongest back by the passenger rear tire. I pulled off the back portion of the inner wheel well and did not notice any fluid. I also dropped the spare tire and it is also dry. I noticed there is a black canister with some hoses going to it between the rear tire and bumper. Could that be the culprit? Do I have to remove the bumper to replace if that is the problem? And last, is it safe to drive?
Sounds like you found your charcoal canister. I haven't specifically looked at where mine is, but that is exactly what my IROC's looks like . It is there to filter the vapors.
Should be safe to drive, might not be safe to smoke around.

Ideally, I would like to finish off the summer and if not easy to replace - a winter task.
