Default Optispark vs Crank Trigger

I have a 93 LT1 with an Optispark distributor. The car is used exclusively for the track days. I have an electric water pump to install and I would like to replace the timing chain with a gear drive system. I just need to either find a way to drive the Optispark from the gear drive system or replace the Optispark with a crank trigger.

Has anyone replaced their Optispark with a crank trigger system?

What did you have to do to the computer?

Any other problems?

Although I haven't done this (I hate it when I see posts that start like that!). I have heard of replacing the timing chain with gears and no mention of a problem with the opti. I think the opti is driven off the end of the cam, not the cam gear. Call the vendor.

The Optispark in the 94 and up are cam driven. My 93 is driven from a splined shaft that goes into the cam sprocket. I have thought about upgrading to the 94+ opti, but for about the same $$$ I can buy a crank trigger kit.

They say the opti spark sends signals to the computer to fire the injectors. But '92-'93 cars don't have sequential fuel injection. We have a batch fire system. So I think that arguement doesn't apply to us.. See if it works:yesnod:.

I think it also sends the signal to the ignition module to fire the spark plugs.

i say go with the crank trigger...the only problem is, you need a distributor to run a crank trigger, which means drilling a hole through the intake to mount a distributor.
