I'm very interested in this topic as well, because I am interested in stealing an 80's Corvette.

Thanks in advance,

-Steve

84's don't have VATS

But the standard procedure, is to test the key, find the resistance, build a small circuit out of resistors, and splice it into the vats cable under the steering column.

1984 vettes do not have VATS, so if you are having intermittent starter motor trouble, I recommend that you remove both battery cables and clean them and the battery posts and re-install . You might also have starter motor / starter solenoid problems.

Ditto the response on VATS on an '84 - there is a tech tip under the C4 section for this specific job.

In addition to the replies above - you might have a bad ignition switch too.

My '67 Camaro did something similar - at the time (a student with no money) I made a NASCAR type solution that also worked in terms of stopping my friends who were always trying to take the car - a hidden switch wired directly to the solenoid let me trigger the starter and start the engine, but only after the key was on. I thought it was kinda cool!

I didnt know it wasnt called VATS on the 84's, but we do (at least i do) have a anti theft system. When i lock my doors, the security light comes one. If you open the door without the key, then the horn goes off and the starter is disabled, but the key doesnt have a chip. What i have to do is put the key in the door, turn it to the front to disable, and then to the back to unlock. Lately, I can only diasble from the passenger door and not from the drivers side. ANy more info on this would be appreciated.

It can be disabled with that little wire thing from Ecklers, or by unchecking a checkbox in the ECM program.

his last post indicates he means the factory alarm...

I'm not quite sure of the wiring, so I couldn't tell you how to disable this one ,sorry.

Haven't had one of these apart but pretty sure there is a switch associated with the key lock door tumbler. If if you have the factory service manual, look around for the "Left Hand Door Key Switch". According to my diagram, when the key is used to unlock the door, the switch rotates to the ground position and and provides the "disarm input signal" (books term). Am I to understand you unlock the left car door with the key and the alarm sounds after opening the door?

This wire combines with the right door switch and since the right one works, the left side circuit is suspect.

Check the owners manual for anything on "Universal Theft Deterrent" and see if all other features are working.

Good luck

Yes you are correct, I can disarm from the passenger side but not the drivers side. Its not contacting to send the signal. Thats why i wanted to disable the whole thing.

Well, if you want to disarm the thing, maybe another tactic would be to never ARM the thing in the first place.

The UTDS on most models, (the owners manual usually has a very good description of this system-do you have access to an owners manual?), is ARMED by hitting the electronic door lock button on either side door. This is usually the only way to tell the system you want the intrusion system ARMED for horn duty. When you hit the electric door lock button on either door, this action does two things: a)hear the nice solid click, locks being moved to lock position, and b)this tells the UTDS to ARM the system.

I am assuming the C4's UTDS is fairly consistent across years.

The only way to DISARM the system (at least according to my manual-84's may be different), is to unlock the doors with a key. The door lock key moves a little switch over and provides the ground as stated in earlier posts. I am nearly certain you could remove the door panels and wire up a continuous ground. Of course, if you remove a door panel, might as well fix the problem. Suppose you could find the signal wire, attach to a ground, and it would signal "Disarm" all the time. Arguably, this would require more time and effort than to just fix the little lock thingy.

In summary, if you never arm the system by locking the doors with the interior electric door locks (assuming 84's have this feature), you shouldn't be concerned with disarming the system. And those owners manuals are a big help. Read mine twice.

Yeah i got an owners manual. I guess i could take apart the door and start fishing around, but i was looking for a quicker fix because i love my power door locks. :D

Easy for me to say but you could pull the left door panel, get a good view of the door lock area and let us know. Have someone use the key and see what happens. There must be someone on this list whose been in that area. The circuit diagram looks very simple.

Good luck.
