The air conditioner compressor on my 86 seems to be making a chirping noise. I've use a stethoscope to try is isolate the noise between the air conditioner pulley and the belt tensioner pulley and it seems to be coming from the underside of the air conditioner pulley. My best guess is the bearings.
Does this sound about right? If so, can the shaft and brearings be replaced without replacing the compressor? The air is working fine (except for a display problem that I have been living with for a few years). The noise is there regardless of air on or not.
The clutch assembly for the R4 compressor is less than $50 and will include a new pulley with the bearing installed. Hopefully, the shaft on yours isn't out of round; otherwise you need the replace the compressor, but you can usually get a new A/C Delco R4 (including the clutch) for about $250 If you buy the clutch assembly, make sure it comes with a shim kit or order it separately. Generally, you want an air gap between the outer hub and pulley of .020. The last time I looked, the Last Detail http://www.tld-corvette.com had the best prices on Corvette a/c parts.
