Default Can I install exhaust using raceramps? 1986

I bought an exhaust system with catalytic converter (no pre-cats) and I have a set of race ramps that I think I can drive up on and give me enough room to change the pipes. Not headers. Manifold back to the rear pipes is all. Can I do or do I need to use a jack and jack stands which I think is sketchy knowing that I would have to jack the front up ... put the stands in there and then jack the back up and put the stands in back there.? Maybe I should just take the pipes to a mechanic and have him install them instead?

Exhaust and Cat

Thanks,
Robert

Not really enough room for me with race ramps to do that job. I'd have it on 4 jack stands at their highest setting if I wanted to do it at home.

seems to me, I needed about 16 inches clearance to change out the exhaust. don't think you get that with race ramps. I have 11 inch ramps which gets me the necessary clearance in the front. in the rear, jacks and jack stands to level up the car. I can pretty much get in there lying on a creeper. i've done at least a half dozen c4 system with my ramps and jack stands.

You can do cat back with nothing.

getting the front y out you probably need a little more.

Sure, the race ramps will work... HOWEVER... you have just added a lot of difficulty to this project. I just did a cat back Corsa on my 91 ZR1 last weekend, so I know it is doable.

Best to take it to a shop and/or get it on a lift.

Default What about the convertible crossbrace?

So I should have said earlier that I have a convertible and a crossbrace. There's no way to get that Y-pipe in and out without removing it. What considerations to frame geometry must I consider when removing and replacing the crossbrace?

Thanks,
Robert

No special handeling required. If you are just raising, removing the cross piece then installing, you are good. Now, if you removed the cross piece and went auto crossing, that woudl be a difference story...

My car lives on jackstands. Put a jack under the pinch weld below one of the mirrors, Jack up one side and place jackstands at the jacking points. Repeat with the other side.

Is below the mirrors somewhat the balance point? This will bring 2 wheels up at once? Thanks again.

This guy has no issues working under his car...please consider this practical alternative to jacking up your Vette with a floor jack and jack stands.

yup. Both wheels on the side come up. I use that method on my C4, have used it on my C5z, C6z and now on my C7z. I haven't bent a car yet.

I go to the one just behind the front wheel before it straightens out, so just in front of where you go and I'm pretty sure that's how I cracked my windshield. That being said I can't go further back because my rocker panel is lower than the pinch weld... however that is how I used to do it.

Did you have your top on or off when you cracked your windshield?

Honestly I don't remember. Probably on though, I usually put it on when I jack up the car. That being said it hasn't gotten worse since. Still only about 3 inches long, so I really don't know if that was the cause as that was simply when I noticed it.

Default Stuck on 2 Bolts for the crossbrace-What to do??????

So I got the car up on Jackstands on the front and raceramps on the back ... plenty of room but no I have a problem. There are 16 bolts on the crossbrace, they were on there pretty good, broke a socket but the last 2 are NOT stock bolts and they just spin and don't back out. I think this brace has been off before and reinstalled with weird bolts. Is it possible they stripped the threads before and ended up putting nuts on the back and if so how did they get them in there?

What should I do? Drill or grind them off and hope that I can get nuts on the new bolts? No way to get the exhaust out without the crossbrace off.

I just realized that those are grade 8 bolts .... ugh!

I tried the impact wrench on them and one of the spinning ones backed out .... OK!!! So I drilled off the the other one.
